NUCA Student Phillip Shaw has been telling us about his involvement in an exciting new project that marries the latest technology with a museum that showcases the heritage of one of North Norfolk’s most popular towns, The Mo Sheringham Museum.

The Sheringham Project began in April this year, its intention to contribute to a museum experience that will resonate with a younger audience. Working on a purely voluntary basis, Phil will be showcasing aspects of the Victorian Sheringham in a 3D fly-though animation.

Phil’s first brief was to recreate the main street – Station Road and High Street. When we spoke to Phil he had already begun ‘reconstructing’ the clock tower which historically marks the centre of the town.

Ultimately, visitors will be able to take a virtual journey down a Victorian era Station Road, passing long-closed businesses and buildings now dramatically changed, including:

The Dairy and Tea Rooms (now the Jolly Tar Restaurant)

Rymer’s Cycle Hire (now Sullivan’s Hairdresser)

Blythe and Wright (still here)

Piggot’s

Pratt’s – interior and exterior (doesn’t exist in reality anymore, but a mock up of the shop is in the museum)

The Methodist Chapel

The Clock Tower with the clock face on it – you’ll be able to ‘fly’ around this

Bakers (now Sainsbury’s)

Lushers Bakers

The Two Lifeboats Hotel

Depending on his schedule, Phil hopes to have the project completed later this Autumn, after which time his work will be shown on a big LCD flat screen TVs at The Mo.

Phil says of the project: “The Mo exhibits Sheringhams local history and in particular its renowned nautical culture. The Mo showcases a collection of RNLI lifeboats that once operated on the coast of Sheringham whilst upstairs on the first floor is a diverse collection of historical exhibits showcasing the history of Sheringham through the ages. My 3D fly-through is designed to engage younger audiences into learning about the history of the town.

This is a wonderful opportunity to have my work on show and actually contribute something academic to a local community whilst helping a registered charity”.

Music

For the blues fans we have the eldest sons of the late great Muddy Waters Mud Morganfield and his band (Wed 31 Aug). He’s blessed with a big and powerful voice and a natural sense of showmanship that ensures that audiences fall right into the palm of his hand. He mixes up his live set with his dad’s classic songs and his own original material.

Rise Up presents the pioneering reggae superstar Johnny Clarke performing with UK Dub and Afrobeat band Soothsayers (Fri 2 Sep). Johnny personified the so called ‘rockers’ period in Jamaican music, a transitional time in the music which gave us the classics ‘Be Upright Natty Dread’ and ‘Move Out of Babylon’.

The front man of the now legendary Texan “Lift To Experience” Josh T Pearson returns to NAC (Thu 22 Sep) to perform songs from his first solo album.
From stark, romantic ballads and dialogue sequences to raw Northwest garage rock and cinematic songscapes, Richmond Fontaine (Mon 26 Sep) are proving to have moved far beyond their cow-punk roots.

The Norwich Ukulele Festival (Sat 8 Oct) presented by Soapbox will be a day-long celebration of this extraordinary little instrument. Including workshops and lessons from Gemma Cullingford, play-a-longs, games, open mic, comedy, DJ’s, dancing, stalls, evening performances and much more!

The bittersweet melancholy of Leisure Society (Sat 15 Oct) with their bouncing bass, flurries of flute, jazz drums and Tim Burton-style backing vocals, will be the perfect antidote to the oncoming darker Autumn nights.

80’s soul man Andrew Roachford (Sat 22 Oct), best known for classics ‘Cuddly Toy’ and ‘Family Man’, will be wowing fans with tracks from his new album.

Daniel Sloss (Thu 17 Nov) may still be in short trousers in comedy terms but he’s already had sides splitting on ‘8/10 Cats’ ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘Comedy Rocks’. ‘Hysterical… A stunning show of observational humour’- Sunday Express.
