As well as discovering new artists, sometimes it is just as satisfying to see great work by established favourites.  To warm your hearts this winter, The Hatfield Hines Gallery in Holt is staging a show of new work by some of their most popular artists.

Series on show include Irish cottages and crofts by the Scottish colourist Edwin Scotterz: these are recent works showing that at the age of 90 his refreshing, bold work shows no signs of abating.

Also to tempt collectors is an unusual series of works on paper by the Lavenham-born Roy Turner Durrant 1925 – 1998, who, having studied at Camberwell during this period under John Minton is now an established collectable name in the London galleries and auction houses.

This year, ‘small but perfectly formed coastal art gallery’, Hatfield Hines of Holt are holding an exciting compeition to discover the best loved view of Norfolk. And should you be lucky enough to win, the rather brilliant prize is an original oil painting of the view by Norwich-born artist David Baxter worth around £400.

‘We’re always keen to show visitors new views of Norfolk’ says Gallery owner Clare Hatfield, ‘so – inspired by this year’s Holt Festival – we’re on a quest to find Norfolk’s scenic top ten.’

The survey was kicked-off by a nomination from celebrity chef-patron of the Michelin-starred Morston Hall, Galton Blackiston, who told the Gallery ‘My favourite view is seen on the drive from Langham to Morston. At one point in the journey you get a perfect view from Blakeney Point to the Watch House.  On a summer’s evening it’s just fantastic and I love it!’

Everyone who takes part in the summer scenic survey will be entered into a prize draw in September.  The lucky winner will receive a specially commissioned oil painting of their own favourite view by popular Norfolk landscape artist David Baxter.

To enter, download a form here and post it back to the gallery, pick up a form at Hatfield Hines Gallery on Fish Hill in Holt, or visit their website and enter online.

The ‘scenic survey’ is running now, with a deadline for the receipt of entries of 15th September 2010.

The long summer school holidays are almost upon us and there’s lots of fun to be had at Norwich’s Dragon Hall which is especially welcoming families over the coming weeks.

Throughout the summer the ancient building is inviting families and young visitors the opportunity to ‘Step Into A Story’. Every week throughout the summer there are weeklong activities based on a different themed story, inspired by the people and history of Dragon Hall.

Step into a new story each week to discover a fun range of craft activities, trails, dressing up and much more. One day of each week will be a special hands-on day with extra things to see and do and exciting things to make and take home.

Normal admission prices apply, except for the special activity days, which cost a little bit more to cover materials and additional activities. Full listings details at the end of this.

For the first week of the holidays, Monday 28 – Friday 30 July visitors are invited to Meet The Toppes’. Robert Toppes was the founder of Dragon Hall, a wealthy merchant and Mayor.
