There are many reasons to visit The Gardeners Arms Free House pub (also known as The Murderers) on Timberhill in Norwich.
For one, it has a rich (and, in some parts, dark) heritage; dating back to 1530, it is classed among one of the 100 most historic pubs in Britain. Still delightfully traditional in layout and atmosphere, there is no shortage of nooks and crannies, and the focus is very much on excellent home cooked food and great beer.
Second, for beer lovers and real ale fans, The Gardeners Arms features 9 real ales and around 11-18 cask ales each week. It is a regular in the Good Beer Guide (one of only 16 Norwich pubs to feature in the Good Beer Guide 2012) and holds it’s own Beer Festival each autumn.
Third, for sports fans, The Gardeners Arms (The Murderers) received the accolade of being the best sports bar in the Eastern Region in the 2011 Great British Pub Awards (and second in the entire competition). With Sky Sports in 3D, need we say more?

Finally, if you’re in a more café-culture mood, then the adjoining Murderers Café-Bar offers a comprehensive menu of delicious lunches, meals and hot beverages.
Returning to that ‘dark past’, why is it widely known as ‘The Murderers’? As the blue plaque inside (one of few ‘inside’ plaques apparently) explains, in 1895 Frank Miles murdered his estranged wife, Mildred – the landlady’s daughter, in the very same doorway that still exists today.
