Well-established and with something of a following, The Wildebeest Arms is one of only two Norwich eateries to have achieved a Michelin Bib Gourmand (roughly meaning it serves excellent food at exceptional prices). The other, incidentally, is fellow Animal Inns Family member, the 1up Restaurant. This is on top of 2 AA Rosettes.
Decked out with lashings of subtle British Colonial style (including African artefacts and majestic oak tables), the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and the service warm and efficient.
As with all the Animal Inns progeny, The Wildebeest is designed to be enjoyed by all - from business custom to families. Despite the high quality and attentive service that is par for the course, standing on ceremony and snobbery are not endorsed at this pub restaurant.
The modern European-style menus offer a host of mouth-watering dishes, using many local ingredients, complemented by a superb wine list with an extensive range of global treats at very reasonable prices.
For brighter days, there is a fabulous parasol-covered outdoor eating area and enclosed garden, making The Wildebeest as perfect for sunny afternoon dining as it is for romantic evening dinners.
Parking is ample and situated just off the main A140, 2 miles south of Norwich, in the quiet village of Stoke Holy Cross, it is well worth the journey.
Booking is essential, especially for evenings and weekends.
