Found just outside Norwich, it is a real pleasure to include The Parson Woodforde in our collection of inspiring places to eat in Norwich and Norfolk. Opened in October 2010, this superb freehouse and restaurant was extensively refurbished under the careful observance of Chef-Manager David Smith and his very competent team.
The rustic building dates back to 1827, and has formerly existed under the name of The Five Ringers. The pub was renamed The Parson Woodforde in the late 1980s after Mr James Woodforde, a local legend and diarist with a huge interest in food and drink (think early food blogger!). The current team obviously shares the Parson’s passion for good food and good drink, imparting a healthy dash of Norfolk heritage into their modern menus and styling.
The restaurant is large and family-friendly, styled in a blend of the traditional and contemporary, with wooden beams and flooring alongside glitzy light fittings and purple tones. Head Chef Eden Derrick and Sous Chef Gregg Baker have devised a superb set of menus, including a Bar Menu of lighter bites, which include fresh ingredients almost exclusively sourced from within Norfolk.
On the MAIN MENU (sample), expect to find such delights as Game & Apricot Terrine with Red Onion Marmalade and Charred Potato Bread, Swannington 10oz 21-day matured Ribeye Steak with Hand cut Chips, Gallette of Haloumi with Baby Ratatouille, Polenta, Dressed Rocket & Sweet Pepper Coulis. All dishes are exquisitely presented and there is always at least one option available to vegetarian diners.
The BAR MENU (sample) is a slightly more relaxed affair (though no less wonderful), with Homemade Gourmet Pizza, Burgers and freshly baked filled lunchtime rolls. Certainly there is much here to appeal to children.
A traditional roast dinner is available on Sundays from £10.95 per head for one course.
Throw in DESSERTS (sample) to-die-for and a very well-stocked freehouse bar serving Norfolk and Suffolk cask ales, continental beers, WINES by the glass and bottle and a wide selection of soft drinks and you have an eating house that should be top of your list to seek out if you haven’t done so already.
