A charming alternative to slick City-based Bed and Breakfasts, yet still offering the perfect base from which to explore Norwich and the surrounding area, Sallowfield House is a unique and wonderful find. Originally a Dairy set in what was once the ancient Wymondham Abbey Deer Park, you arrive at Sallowfield House via a leafy private track. Upon doing so you leave the commotion of the 21st century behind and enter a peaceful rural haven that you may find evokes lazy idyllic summers or cosy country winters of yesteryear.
The Bed and Breakfast is flanked by a beautiful English Garden (opened for the National Gardens Scheme for the first time this year) that is set around a large pond and comes complete with outdoor tables for lunch and tea. Views across open farmland add to the feeling of space and nature, and will assist in the relaxation you’ll feel when staying at this out of town hideaway.
Sallowfield House has 3 rooms - two doubles and a single, all with private bathroom or shower facilities. All rooms have an elegant but cosy traditional ‘country house’ feel to them, as do the communal sitting and dining rooms.
In keeping with the traditional theme, breakfast at Sallowfield House involves local produce and homemade preserves. You can take breakfast in the kitchen on cooler days (the Aga will help keep the chills at bay) or in the separate dining room if you’d prefer. Upon arrival you will be offered tea and homemade biscuits (or even a glass of wine should you need one after your journey!). Dinner can be taken by arrangement (please request when booking).
Like a visit to a bygone era, Sallowfield House is the ultimate antidote to modern life. If it weren’t for the easy access to the shops, bars and restaurants of Wymondham and Norwich, and the free WI-FI at the B&B, you might think you’d been transported to a pre-war universe where the pace of life is reassuringly undemanding.
Rates: £60 per night for double room, £35 for single room. Dinner by arrangement at £20 per person for 3 courses.
Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement (Sallowfield House has two canine residents of its own: Fred & Spider).
Due to the deep body of water on the property, children under 9 years of age are not accepted.
